The Thin Red Line is a film about the experiences of an army company during the World War II battle of Guadalcanal. But it is much more than just another average World War II movie. The Thin Red Line is often compared to Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, but the two films have nearly nothing in common. The Thin Red Line isn't about patriotism, it makes no difference between the Americans and the Japanese, they all have to go through the same experiences. The film shows the futility of war and the ensuing destruction of nature.

The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by James Jones.
Terrence Malick, who had been absent from the film business for 20 years, directed the film.
The cast features performances from Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Jim Caviezel, Elias Koteas, Ben Chaplin, Adrien Brody, Woody Harrelson, John Cusack and John C. Reilly, and some (semi-)cameos, like John Travolta, George Clooney, and Jared Leto. Many of the cast's more prominent names, like Mickey Rourke or Bill Pullman, are not even mentioned in this very special movie.
