Brake conversion
Things I had ''lying'' around
Alfa romeo 164 Turbo diesel or 3000V6 discs and calipers
Porsche 928S4 ''enormous brembo calipers and discs
Fittipaldi wheels (17x9) + michelin pilot 215/40/17
Rover SD1 front struts
Things I had done at the machineshopdrilling out the holes in the halfshafts
skimmed all discs
machined all the brackets and adapters that I made
How I did it I first converted my car to 5 studs. The reason I did all this was that I had some nice wheels lying around
(17x9inch from alfa 164) and they had a 5 bolt pattern. The other advantage was that theRover struts use bigger wheel bearings ( the tr7 items are really small !!).
Rover front struts are almost the same as the tr7/8 item except for the 5 stud
pattern and the top mounting of the spring. These are quite easy to convert to a tr7. You just cut of the top (about 3 inches), take some secondhand tr7/8 struts, cut them in half, and insert the tr7/8 top in the Rover strut. Weld everything together
and just put them on the car. The Roverbolt pattern is almost the same as alfa, I just had todrill out the holes.
At the rear it was even easier. Take out the halfshafts, weld up all the holesin the flange (I think this is the right word). Redrill everything to the 5 bolt pattern. The disc fits
over the flange, and you just have to make a bracket to mount the caliper. Mind you, because
I used Alfa front discs at the back, I don't have any handbrake. I'm making a hydraulic
handbrake system now. I'm driving the car for a year now and the brakes are fantastic.Braking hard from 0 to 100 is more fun than accelerating. The Porsche brakes are
not easy to find, but with a little bit of imagination, you can convert almost any system. The problem with using the Porsche brakes is that you need 17 inch wheels, but it stops wonderfull.
Ok guys, here are some
new pics.
I didn't have time to right a matching story yet.
